In a heart-stopping moment that has captivated opera lovers worldwide, Chinese opera student Liu Jianwei made headlines after spontaneously joining a performance by the acclaimed soprano Lisette Oropesa.
The incident took place at Italy’s Teatro Regio di Parma during Oropesa’s rendition of Sempre libera from La Traviata. Traditionally a soprano–tenor duet, the aria saw its male part unexpectedly absent. Without hesitation, Liu, a 24-year-old opera student at Conservatorio Giuseppe Nicolini di Piacenza, rose from the audience and flawlessly filled in for the tenor from the second line.
Oropesa, initially surprised, quickly recognized his talent, acknowledging him with a smile and later a photo and autograph. The impromptu duet quickly went viral on social media, highlighting Liu’s courage, skill, and love for the art form.
Despite the widespread praise, Liu was quick to temper the excitement. In a statement on Chinese social media, he emphasized:
“I stood up to sing because Lisette Oropesa is a musician I love very much … Please don’t interrupt singers when they are singing on stage. It’s impolite behavior. Don’t imitate me and I will never do this again in the future.”
The viral moment struck a chord because it captured spontaneity and raw talent in the high-art world of opera—a field typically marked by strict etiquette and meticulous planning. Audiences were enchanted not only by Liu’s performance but also by the warm, supportive reaction from Oropesa herself, making the event a rare and magical blend of professionalism and human connection.
Liu’s bold act also underscores the global nature of classical music today: a Chinese student studying in Italy stepping up to perform alongside a Cuban-American soprano, bridging cultures through the universal language of music.
While Liu’s impromptu performance was extraordinary, it also serves as a gentle reminder of the importance of respecting live performances. Nevertheless, for that unforgettable night in Parma, opera fans around the world witnessed a spontaneous duet that will be remembered for years to come.
