Philadelphia glowed with warmth and pride as the Project HOME community gathered to celebrate an incredible milestone — the opening of our 1,000th affordable housing unit. What began more than three decades ago as a small, determined effort to bring people in from the cold has blossomed into a citywide movement — one that has opened a thousand doors and countless new beginnings.
On that unforgettable day, music and mission came together in perfect harmony. Among the many voices honoring this achievement was one of our longtime partners and dear friends, Jon Bon Jovi. His presence brought not only star power but a deep sense of sincerity and shared purpose. As he took the stage, the crowd fell silent, drawn in by his emotion and his words that reflected years of commitment to our shared cause.
“Behind every one of these thousand doors,” Bon Jovi said, his voice catching slightly with feeling, “is a story — a second chance, a family reunited, a dream reborn.”
Those words hung in the air like a benediction. Around him, residents, volunteers, and supporters wiped away tears. It wasn’t just a speech — it was a living anthem of compassion and resilience, one that spoke to the heart of what Project HOME stands for.
Building More Than Homes

Each of the 1,000 units represents far more than four walls and a roof. They are foundations for stability, safety, and self-worth. From transitional residences to permanent supportive housing, every building tells the story of a community that refuses to give up on one another.
This milestone stands as a testament to the power of partnership — to the tireless dedication of Project HOME residents and staff, the generosity of donors and volunteers, and the vision of supporters like the Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation, whose collaboration has been instrumental in bringing hope to neighborhoods across Philadelphia.
Project HOME’s model has always been about more than housing alone. It’s about breaking the cycle of homelessness and poverty through comprehensive supports: education, employment, healthcare, and community engagement. Every home we open is connected to a network of opportunities that empower residents to take the next step toward independence and fulfillment.
Stories Behind the Doors
Every door has a story — stories like Marisol’s, who spent years navigating shelters and uncertainty before finding her place in a Project HOME residence. Today, she proudly calls her apartment her own.
“It’s not just a home,” she said quietly, smiling. “It’s proof that someone believes in me.”
That belief — that everyone deserves dignity, safety, and the chance to rebuild — is the heartbeat of Project HOME. From young adults aging out of foster care to veterans returning home, from mothers seeking stability for their families to individuals overcoming addiction or trauma, each resident adds a new verse to the ongoing song of hope that echoes throughout our community.
A Shared Vision for the Future
As Bon Jovi’s final words faded and the crowd erupted in applause, the feeling in the air was unmistakable: gratitude, pride, and purpose. The 1,000th home is not a finish line — it’s a promise to keep going.
“Hope is not just a word we say,” said Project HOME co-founder Sister Mary Scullion. “It’s something we build — together.”
And build we will. Because every time a new key is placed into someone’s hands, it opens not only a door, but a future filled with possibility.
